Nico Drennan (USA): “The Karlovac International Guitar Summer School is one of the most pivotal experiences of my musical career. I learned a lot and met many interesting people. Went twice.”

Patricia Turnšek (Slovenia): It is great! I met many people there, I got a lot of performance experience. I like that we do a lot of chamber music and gain a lot of knowledge from the teachers.

Emina Keskinović (Bosnia&Herzegovina): “It is impossible to describe—you have to experience it! I have been going for five years and will go as long as it is there.

The Karlovac International Summer Guitar School is a nine-day learning experience at which instruction, practice, performance, cultural and social enrichment, recreation, and entertainment go hand in hand on a daily basis. The Summer School is led by a team of highly accomplished and experienced educators who have been developing the concept of this summer school over the past eighteen years: Dr. Miroslav Lončar, Dr. Nataša Klasinc-Lončar, and prof. Žarko Ignjatović. This team has recently been joined by the School of Music Director, Snježana Mrljak, who helps expanding the vision of this summer school and bringing the dreams of its team to fruition. This summer school is unique in that it does not stay in one town, but it takes on a concert tour where the participants gain a lot of performance experience and see a number of picturesque towns across Croatia, share their music with many people, and get to enjoy the happiness on the faces of so many audiences and the wonderful hospitalities of the hosts.

The School of Music: The Karlovac School of Music was founded in 1804 and is the oldest school of music in Croatia. The School is located in the oldest part of town known as The Star and is looking on the beautiful city park. All practice sessions are held at the School of Music, Cesarčeva 3.

The Dorm: The Vladimir Nazor Student Dormatory will be the primary dorm for the participants from out of town. The dorm is located near the center of town (adresa), 5 minutes walking distance from the school of music. The dorm is staffed with counselors that are on duty 24 hrs., and with cafeteria staff that serves breakfast. The cost is 50kn/night without breakfast and ??? with breakfast.

Meet Our Team

Miroslav: He started this summer school 19 years ago. He conducts the Guitar Orchestra and coaches some of the chamber groups. Miroslav writes a lot of music for guitar, conducts other guitar orchestras, teaches a lot of students, and performs frequently. Many of his former students are now guitar professors at colleges and universities. He is from Karlovac and as a kid, he went to music school here.

Nataša: She is Miroslav’s wife, and she teaches a lot of middle- and high-school students and has performed a great number of concerts with Miroslav all over Europe and the United States. She works with the soloists, coaches some of the chamber groups, and plays in the guitar orchestra.

Žarko: He is a versatile and experienced solo and chamber musician who teaches university students. He is a very sophisticated musician and can challenge the best of players to rise to the next level. He primarily works with the soloists, coaches some chamber groups and plays in the orchestra. He also makes sure everybody’s guitar is in tune.

Snježana (Snow White): She is the director of the School of Music and our Godmother. She writes grant proposals for us, takes care of public relations, and makes sure we have everything we need. She also dreams big for this summer school. She does not play in the orchestra because she plays the piano. O well, no one is perfect.

Tena: She teaches at the School of Music and often performs with her students. She takes care of a lot of logistics throughout the year, plays in the orchestra, and assists with the rehearsals.

Darinka: She teaches at the School of Music and leads the school guitar orchestra. She was Miroslav’s first guitar teacher. She plays in the orchestra and assists with the rehearsals.

Guitar Orchestra

All participants participate in the Guitar Orchestra that practices from 9 to 11 AM and 3:30 to 5:30 PM each day. All participants, regardless of age and experience, practice together alongside the teachers and former participants who join the orchestra just for fun. The Orchestra prepares a fun concert program and then—we go on a concert tour!

Solo and Chamber Music

Two hours are devoted each day to lessons in solo performance and playing in a chamber group. (A full, detailed schedule will be given out the first day.) All three directors are actively engaged in private lessons and chamber group coaching during that period.

Paying

The full tuition, (including participation in the Guitar Orchestra, a T-shirt, admission to all concerts, individual lessons with at least two teachers, participating in a chamber group with coaching, lunch on Wednesday, dinners on Friday and Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday, bus rides to all out-of-town performances, one night at a hostel on the Adriatic Coast,)– is ONLY 200 Euros.

Both the tuition and the dorm fee can be paid upon the arrival to the summer school. Here is the paying information:

Food: There are restaurants, fast food places, bakeries, and food stores within walking distance in the center of town. The cost of a quick meal is ca. ??-?? kn. A map with food places will be provided the first day.

Safety: Karlovac is a very safe town where children, teenagers, and adults walk, play, and hang out in the center of town freely and safely at all times. This feeling of safety is one of the attractions of this summer school, and the participants get to know each other and bond by walking to and from the music school together or enjoying an ice cream on a bench in the park.

Currency: Kuna is the only official currency in Croatia and foreign currencies can be exchanged at any bank in town at about the same exchange rate. The local banks will also be indicated on the map.

Arriving in Karlovac: Karlovac is easily reachable by car, bus and train. (Maybe by bicycle too if you don’t live too far). Participants flying into Croatia will be picked up by our staff at the airport in Zagreb and taken back to the airport.

Emergencies: The School of Music is attended at all times during the summer school by a number of teachers, administrators, and a custodian, who can contact appropriate services in case of an emergency. Additionally, the participants will receive cell phone numbers of the directors for emergencies.

The Unforgettable Experience: Most participants build lasting friendships at our international summer school. Why? These nine days are packed with chances to interact with students and faculty, explore Karlovac, attend concerts, practice music together, play games, perform in and experience picturesque and historic places, eat together, ride the bus to performances together, swim in a river and the Adriatic Sea together, play and sing songs together, go on a concert tour, etc., etc. We all work hard, and play hard. If that doesn’t form lasting friendships, noting does. If you come to Karlovac, when you leave, you will leave friends and you will want to come back. The best thing is that it is not forced—it just happens. We just know it.
